Sweet Fire

The sweet smell of success

The Challenge:

When the wild west got a bit too crowded
When the owners of Wild, Wild West Tobacco came to us, they had a familiar problem: a trademark conflict. A local competitor, Wild Bill’s, had a similar name—turning head-to-head marketing into something of a western standoff. With 30 stores across Michigan and Wisconsin, this was no small matter. They needed a name that broke cleanly from the competition while making a different kind of claim.

The "Ah-ha" Moment:

From Wild West to a warm welcome
The assignment called for a name as evocative as Wild, Wild West, but with a more consumer-centric focus. We turned to one of our favorite naming strategies: the intuitive “ish” name. Sweet Fire doesn’t describe the business literally. It captures its essence. “Sweet” suggests the aroma and sensory pleasure of a good cigar, while “Fire” evokes the glowing ember and the familiarity of hearth and home. Together, the words create a feeling customers can access before anyone explains it. That warmth also reflected the owners’ larger vision: building a company where employees could advance their careers and grow with the business. Sweet Fire gave the organization a name broad enough to hold both promises—sensory satisfaction for customers and opportunity for its people. Since the rebrand, Sweet Fire has grown from 30 locations in Michigan and Wisconsin to more than 80 retail locations across four states: Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio and Iowa. As we’ve seen with other rebrands—including PODS, Rally House and TeamLogic IT—the right name does more than replace an old identity. It gives a growing business a stronger platform for what comes next.
