During the housing crisis, foreclosed homes faced another threat: what happened while they stood empty. Broken windows, theft, vandalism, and unauthorized occupation could compound losses for owners already facing a difficult market.
Entrepreneur James Heagney came to Tungsten to develop a brand for a new business providing steel guards for vacant buildings’ doors and windows. The identity needed to communicate tough defense while making the service easy to understand and remember.
The creative breakthrough came from a familiar image: a tough dog on the porch, keeping unwanted visitors away. The company’s steel guards served much the same purpose, protecting the points where intruders could enter.
That connection inspired DAWGS—Door And Window Guard Systems.
We developed the name and its expanded acronym together, pairing the protective associations of a guard dog with a straightforward explanation of the product. DAWGS gave the business a distinctive personality; Door And Window Guard Systems supplied immediate clarity.
Tungsten also created the original logo, bringing the name and descriptive line together in a cohesive identity.
The Result: A name built to stand guard.
DAWGS launched with a brand that made its purpose intuitive and its personality memorable. The name also created a natural vocabulary for the business, including service language such as “call off the DAWGS.”
From its launch in 2009, DAWGS has grown into a nationwide vacant-property security business, with a network of warehouse and distribution locations spanning 21 cities.
